Diving the U-853
The U-853 is one of the most famous dive sites in the northeast. Despite its popularity, it should only be visited by experienced divers, and should not be penetrated without proper equipment and training

At about 90 feet, you can see what is left of the attack periscope. It is made of stainless steel and shines like new. There are several other stalks around the conning tower which contain antenna and the sky periscope. There is a circular hatch in the conning tower which can be entered. Forward of the coning tower, there is a large blast hole in the deck at 110 feet. This hole is big enough for easy penetration into the officer's quarters, radio room, and control room. Be careful as it is a very tight fit in some places. Forward of the blast hole, the sub can be followed all the way to the bow. All along the deck, there are various hatches and deck compartments that can be explored. Moving aft from the conning tower, you will see an escape hatch over the engine room. Behind the hatch is the gun mount which held the 37 mm deck gun. Continuing aft, you will come to the torpedo loading hatch and a very large blast hole. As you swim over and through this now silent machine of destruction, it's very sobering to think of the 55 young men who perished within this steel tomb.
